The hospital’s humble beginnings date back to 1977, when Late Rt Rev.Dr Alphonsus Mthias, the then Bishop of Chikmagalur invited the sisters offer health services to the poor and needy people specially the Women and Children. The Congregation started a 12 bedded health centre at Jyothinagar near St joseph’s school on 29th March 1979 and embraced its new mission with zeal and set a fine tradition in community care. The hospital thus grew from a local, need-based health centre to a modest institution that catered to the Medical and surgical needs of in and around Chikmagalur.
Over the two decades Doctor’s extended their support and this health centre grew catering to around 45-60 in patients. Thus came the crucial need of building a bigger hospital. After long planning and discussion Late Bishop J.B Sequeria , Bishop of Chikmagalur offered a site of five Acres of land at Housing Board, Chikmagalur for constructing a bigger hospital, As the new dream took shape, the foundation stone of a two storey building was a laid in laid on 4th May 1995. It was inaugurated on 21st February 1999 as a 100 bed hospital The construction completed with the aid of funds received from abroad. This opened a critical chapter in the institution’s history, marking the transition from a modest health centre to a Multispecialty hospital that delivered state-of-the-art diagnostics and emergency care. The hospital was dedicated to Jesus the divine Healer.Dedicated service in the name of the Lord, the eternal healer was the motto of this humble but noble enterprise.
The hospital added more and more specialities and patient facilities, continuously expanding it’s reach and services to the community. These include high-quality ICU, CCU, PICU, NICU, Operation Theatre, Endoscopy, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Urology and Orthopaedics and Blood Bank and Blood Components.
Rapidly going from strength to strength, the hospital flagged off three more red-letter events. In November 2000 inaugurated Blood Bank, C-Arm Image intensifier and Ventilators at ICU. This enhanced the flow of orthopaedic patients. Holy Cross Hospital soon realised the need for Arthroscopic machine and installation of this made the patients happy.
Commencement of DMLT course by CMAI in the year 2000 added feather to Holy Cross as young enthusiastic students joined the Hospital for training. Later in the year 2011 this course was stopped and the state Govt recognized DMLT course of 2-3 years was started with 20 seats.
During its journey after 25 years on 5th November 2004 hospital expanded the Physiotherapy department with addition of Vojta therapy for children with developmental defect. Health care was made available for maximum patients through Various governmental and nongovernmental Schemes. Department of Community outreach was started with RNTCP, DOT and ICTC programme.
