Microbiology

The Microbiology Laboratory is a complete diagnostic lab that performs testing for a full range of human pathogens including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria; yeasts and moulds; blood, tissue, and enteric parasites; and mycobacteria. Techniques used include culture from a wide variety of specimens, special stains, direct antigen detection (Group A streptococci, Cryptosporidium, Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas vaginalis), etc. Once isolated and identified, antibiotic susceptibility testing is performed on bacteria and antifungal susceptibility testing on yeast. Holy cross Hospital is able to support all other nursing homes in and around Chikmagalur as we are blessed with full time experienced  Microbiologist.

Our services are provided through full automation kept in check by regular calibration and controls employing standardised imported reagents and authorization by qualified pathologists. A Cross-checking mechanism for result checking while feeding, reporting and signing of reports in practised to obviate pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical errors to ensure that results with cent-per-cent accuracy reach patients. Physiotherapy

VOJTA PHYSIOTHERAPY Vojta is the surname of a famous Pediatrician and Neurologist from Chekoslovakia who got settled in Germany and developed a special kind of physiotherapy and named it after his name Vojta therapy. Prof. Dr.Vaclav Vojta has developed  a method by which we can screen the newborn babies for detecting children who may develop Central Co-ordination disorders and Neuromotor Developmental disorders.   Early diagnosis consist of three components ; Observation for Spontaneous movements Seven Postural reactions Reflexes Reflexes : If the primitive reflexes are absent in the newborn period  or if they persist even after the completion of certain age then it is an abnormal sign. If vojta therapy is started in the first six months life long handicap can be prevented in at leas 90% of cases. Vojta therapy is taught to the parents and they continue this therapy at home 4 times a day 5 – 20 mts at4 hrs interval by which a regular motor activity is established. Vojta physiotherapist conducts periodical review once in 2 or 3 weeks to see the prognosis and give additional therapy. This procedure is continued until  independent walking is attained.  Another fact is that without much expense parents can do Vojta therapy at home . It need sonly the hands. Vojta therapy at Holy Cross Hospital Every  new born child is screened under three components, observation of spontaneous movements, Seven postural reactions and Reflexes. Parents are given a card along with the immunisation card for regular visit to Vojta therapy department.  There are many  success stories after  children are given Vojta therapy.

Endoscopy

The invention of the endoscope redefined by the word ‘Surgery’ by reducing complex operations to simple day-care procedures. For patients, this meant both diagnosis and treatment of various conditions of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) were now less complicated, pain-free, quicker and cheaper. Our Hospital started using the endoscope from the year  2003. Thereafter thousands of our patients have benefitted from the experience of our renowned Doctors and Nurses. We use it to perform a variety of diagnostic therapeutic procedures that reduce complications, recovery time and costs. Gastroscopy or GED (Oesophageal Gastro-Duodenoscopy)  This procedures enables the visualisation of the upper part of the GI tract-the food pipe, stomach and duodenum. It is used to diagnose conditions such as Oesophageal growths, infection varices, stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastritis, hiatus hernia, detection of tumours and causes of bleeding. Therapeutic Procedures Endoscopes are frequently used as a Therapeutic tool, allowing physicians to not only look inside the GI tract but also treat various conditions. Diagnostic Procedures Use of Endoscope helps in taking biopsy from GI tract. Facilities include an exercise staircase, exercise cycles, parallel bars, weights and gym balls. Emergency Services

Department involves care of patients with acute illness or injuries that require immediate attention. Hospital has got a well equipped Department is equipped to handle all emergency cases. Activities carried out are : Resuscitation . Trained Doctors resuscitate patients who are critically ill or injured. Triage : Patients are Prioritized based on the severity of the conditions. Stabilization : patients are urgently attended and stabilized to prevent further deterioration. Transfer : After emergency treatment patients are transferred to concerned departments if required referred to higher centre. Thinking on our feet and taking the right calls can make the difference between life and death. Our emergency department works quickly and efficiently under nerve-wracking circumstances while handling all types of cases, from minor to the most challenging. Using an all-hands-on-deck approach to saving lives and specialising in emergency treatment, we thus administer the best possible critical care to all our patients. Our emergency team works in a layered hierarchy to ensure that resources are used judiciously and with maximum precision. A Resedential Medical Officer (RMO)  is on duty 24X7. Our Chief Physician round the clock attends required Emergencies.  There is also a senior Sister-in-charge who is assisted by skilled staff nurses and nursing assistants. Cases requiring special attention are further attended by the respective speciality consultant. After a patient is stabilised, Consultants take a call on whether he/she needs to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or the wards. Patients who need to be admitted to the ICU but refuse to do so must sign a consent from stating that they have taken this decision at their own risk. Patient requiring minor procedure it is done at treatment room. Patient who require observation and Day care are admitted for short term duration and is discharged after stabilising the condition. Treatment Room We carry out all minor procedures such as dressings, suturing, reduction & plastering,  plaster cutting, injections, suture removal etc. This department is equipped with all necessary equipments and articles.  Patients who avail of these services are referred either by our OPD or by the visiting Consultants. For referred patients  a  letter from the treating Doctor is mandatory . Medico-Legal cases Medico Legal cases  will not be send out of Hospital unless all the formalities are completed. In case of death before releasing the body Police clearance is required. After registering as Medico legal, to obtain any  patient documents court order is required. Medico legal procedures will be undertaken even if the patient is referred after giving first aid in the Emergency department.

Blood bank

The Blood Bank at holy Cross Hospital works 24X7 to save the lives of people. The Blood Bank was inaugurated in November 2000 to meet the requirements of our in-patients and other surrounding Nursing Homes. Affiliations Our Blood Bank is licensed by Drug Control of State. Safe Blood Our source of blood is primarily voluntary or replacement from healthy donors. We do not accept blood from any other sources. Each unit of blood we collect is screened and tested for HIV1, HIV2 and HCV antibodies, Hepatitis B, surface antigens, VDRL, malarial parasites and other irregular antibodies. We can thus say with utmost confidence that the blood we supply both in-patients and out-patients is safe, screened and certified. Our motto is to provide high quality ‘Safe Blood’ to patients round the clock. We are constantly on a quest to improve and to provide the best in transfusion services to everyone.  Blood donation Requests For Blood We supply whole blood to our patients, other hospitals and nursing homes. In-patients When an-patient requires blood, a request is sent to the Blood Bank after informed consent for transfusion is taken from the patient/patient’s relative. The patient is given the required blood after necessary testing from the Blood Bank. Later the Patient’s relatives may be required to bring in donors to donate blood as replacement for the units issued. If you are a voluntary donor, all you need to do is to contact the Blood Bank to do the needful. Blood Components The first Blood Components was started in Chikkamagaluru at Holy Cross Hospital in 2019 . Items which processed are : Whole Human Blood Concentrated Human Red Blood Cells Fresh Frozen Plasma Platelet concentrate Components of Blood include Plasma, Platelets Red and white blood cells that circulate through body. Blood supplies essential substances such as sugars and oxygen to cells and organs and remove waste from cells. Blood has various functions that are central to survival. They include: supplying oxygen to cells and tissues providing essential nutrients to cells, such as amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose removing waste materials, such as carbon dioxide, urea, and lactic acid protecting the body from diseases, infections, and foreign bodies through the action of white blood cells regulating body temperature The platelets in blood enable the clotting, or coagulation, of blood. When bleeding occurs, the platelets group together to create a clot. The clot forms a scab, which stops the bleeding and helps protect the wound from infection. Hospital supply the above products to Hospitals around Chikkamagluru and Kaduru. Thanks to the Blood Bank for saving Thousands patients including Dengue  with Blood components and Platelet transfusion.

Holy Cross Hospital operates a 24-hour ambulance service which can be availed for admitted patients. According to the need of the patient the Nurse accompanies the referred patients. For obtaining this service contact your Ward In charge who will make the necessary arrangements after paying the transport fare.

X-ray Digital

Department of X-ray imaging is a well set department with very good patient facilities performing more than 10000 Digital X-rays every year. It is working 24x 7 days . Emergency facilities are available for in-patients, out-patients and emergency cases. CR system makes the task prompt  by  transferring the x-rays to the Doctor’s chambers.
